On May 21, 1973, the first revolt against the communist dictatorship broke out in the Spaçi prison camp. The documentary about this significant event is based on the testimony of jete Kadeli, a former political prisoner in Spaç at the time. Kadeli was instrumental in the revolt, notably proposing the raising of a flag devoid of the communist star, an act that imbued the uprising with its political character.
The dramatization of the event for the flag raising in prison was carried out in collaboration with the students of the high school of Rreshen, under the dedicated supervision of teacher Valbona Reçi.
Produced by the Institute for Democracy, Media, and Culture (IDMC) with the support of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation.
. . . This documentary is dedicated to the heroes of the Spaç uprising, which took place from May 21 to 23, 1973. Their courage in the face of the regime’s brutality, the tragic fate of the four executed political prisoners, and the suffering of many others who were re-sentenced will remain an indelible part of our history. Their legacy and memory continue to inspire us.
Special thanks go to Gjetë Kadeli, whose testimony and personal perspective formed the essential foundation of this documentary. His brave contribution to the Spaç uprising and his willingness to share his experiences allowed us to tell this important story as objectively as possible.
We also thank Valbona Reçi, a teacher at Rrëshen High School, and her students for their dedication, organization, and the wonderful stage performance through which they brought the key events of the Spaç uprising vividly to life.
